€100 million Fast Track to Innovation and 5 innovation prizes announced by the EC
In the context of Horizon 2020, the European Commission presented yesterday the details of a new €100 million “Fast Track to Innovation” (FTI) pilot action and five innovation prizes. The FTI’s objective is to support the European economy by providing innovative businesses and organisations with grants to give a final push to get great ideas to market. The prizes offer a reward for technological breakthroughs of high societal relevance. The initiatives emphasize the drive to support innovation in Europe as part of the first, two-year Horizon 2020 work programme. The Fast Track to Innovation scheme will be open to applications from January 2015. It will support small consortia of three to five organisations with strong business participation to give promising ideas the last push before entering the market. The scheme is open to ideas in any area of technology or application and to any legal entity established in the EU or in a country associated to Horizon 2020.
Further information could be found in the European Commission’s press release.

The post-conference report of Water Innovation Europe 2014 (WIE 2014) is now available for all who want to get a deeper look at the key messages and conclusions of WssTP annual stakeholder conference, held under the title ‘Water in Europe: Green Tape or Blue Gold’ on the 25th and 26th of June in Brussels. On the basis of the presentations and discussions during Water Innovation Europe 2014, the outcome of the conference can be summarised into four strategic orientations for the very near future, where water plays an indispensable role. These are:
- Systemic eco-innovation for a circular economy
- Nature-based solutions
- Climate services
- City blueprints for smarter cities and regions
These four strategic orientations, derived from the numerous presentations, indicate a huge number of non-exhaustive opportunities for a sustainable water sector to support economic growth, resource efficiency and the creation of smart green jobs.

The Joint Programming Initiative “Water challenges for a changing world” (Water JPI) has a new Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda which provides a framework for future Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) activities and European investments in the water sector, that amount to over 500 M € per year.
The WATER JPI SRIA presents the RDI needs grouped by thematic areas and priorities according to their scientific and societal importance. This document appears to be essential to develop the long term vision of this EU intergovernmental initiative and to implement the alignment of all RDI activities among member countries. It is based on the previous version released in May 2013 and was updated through a participatory approach, which has involved the members of the Water JPI Advisory Boards, many national experts, the strategic agenda of partnering initiatives, policy documents and foresight studies and the public through an on-line consultation completed by 630 people.
Focusing on tools and measures to provide effective solutions to these most relevant water challenges this SRIA intends to contribute to boost the competitiveness and growth of the European water sector.
